The Minister of International Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has dismissed media studies that the Republic of Benin aspires to be the 37th state in Nigeria.
In a press release issued by the ministry spokesperson, Ferdinand Nwonye, Onyeama stated the report was deceptive.
“The eye of the Ministry of International Affairs has been drawn to deceptive studies within the media that the Republic of Benin is aspiring to be the 37 State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The Honourable Minister of International Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, within the presence of his counterpart from the Republic of Benin, granted an interview after a really fruitful assembly between ministerial delegations from each nations and said therein ‘… the President of Benin Republic stated he would really like the relations between the 2 nations to be so shut as if Benin was the 37th State of Nigeria.’
“The Federal Republic of Nigeria has no territorial ambition and has by no means aspired to make Benin or any nation as half of Nigeria,” Nwonye stated.
